English
The teacher responsible for leading this subject is Ms Jackson: a primary teacher with 15 years’ experience and prior to becoming a teacher Ms Jackson worked as Publicity Manager for the London based publishers Penguin, Random House, UK.
We are passionate about language and literacy and aim to enthuse our children by bringing this subject to life through engaging well-planned lessons which are linked to our non-core, topic work. We also hold events such as World Book Day, our popular 'Off By Heart' poetry recitation competition and enjoy visits from authors. Our library is stocked with a range of reading material: both fiction and non-fiction. Families can also borrow a range of popular titles from our community library.
Here is our policy detailing how English is Taught at St George's Prep.
English is taught by the class teacher, with the planning based on the National Curriculum Programmes of Study. We follow a Systematic Synthetic Phonics scheme which introduces letter names, sounds and formation, building progression until children can read complex words through blending sounds together. All children in year 1 take the DfE Phonics Screening Test - we have an excellent pass rate!
We carefully monitor pupil progress through continual assessment, internal moderation and all pupils in years 2-6 sit GL Assessment exams twice yearly, with a large percentage of each class working at greater depth (beyond DfE expected level for a child of the same age group). Please ask if you'd like to see our results - you won't be disappointed!
Here at St. George’s we recognise that children sometimes need a little extra help to overcome barriers and master misconceptions. With support from our trained Higher Level Teaching Assistants, focused and targeted intervention can be delivered individually or in small groups daily or several times per week (according to need).
